Euro 2004 The Rough Guide to European Football:
A Fan's Handbook 2000-2001
by Peterjon
Cresswell and Simon Evans
(Rough
Guides)
ISBN: 1858285682
655pp
At 655 pages, this guide is of near Biblical proportions. It features
detailed chapters on each of 30 countries. With the exception of
the glaring omission of Lichtenstein and Andorra, it is extremely
comprehensive. Each chapter begins with a Basics Section, which
doubles as an introductory travel guide, and from there delves into
basic vocabulary, the league(s) of the country, local fan culture,
history, and then more detailed sections on the major club teams.
From there, it is on to places to get smashed after (before?) the
game, where to call it a night (i.e., a hotel), restaurants, and
more.
The introduction in the chapter on Portugal, for example, neatly
lays out the background for that country's selection as the site
for the 2004 European Championships and deals with the troubles
faced by the domestic league. In four concise pages you have a brief
but compelling history of Portuguese football. The great names,
the great teams, what is particular to a region or club - it's all
here. Even for the most knowledgeable fan, this makes a great traveling
companion or gift.
